In a keen bid to lead the technological market, Metasphere Ltd has announced successful completion of power harvesting tests with its MM3P RTU and has just installed field trials with a water company.
Commenting, Tim O’Brien, CEO, said; “We believe successfully harvesting power in this way is a first. Other methods employed to power RTUs have included external structures, such as solar panels, but these have presented issues with vandalism. Using mains water was always our goal and we are confident that the trials will prove a success.”
The key benefits are threefold. Firstly an increase in availability of data to users in real time which effectively provides an ‘always on’ mode, invaluable during an incident. Secondly, the elimination of OPEX costs, as much as £500, which are incurred with site visits and battery changes and finally a reduction in the carbon costs associated with both the battery manufacture and supply and with return site visits.
A water turbine charged battery was used to power the MM3P. A one-minute monitoring regime was adopted with 15 minute dial-ins to the server. The turbine was turned off for 3 hours and with the same rate of sampling and dial-in there was no degradation to the RTU and only minimal use of the battery charge.
Metasphere is to trial other methods of power harvesting which will provide power to an RTU. Trial details and results will be made available early 2012.
