A Leakage Lifeline - Complete Distribution Control

E-mail Print PDF

The unfortunate situation that befell Northern Ireland Water last December serves to highlight the need for complete control of distribution networks.  Whilst it is not always possible to predict the damage done to pipework by extreme weather conditions, what will help is to have the means in place whereby any damage that does arise, can be located and repaired as quickly as possible.

Insufficient flow and leakage information makes it very difficult for a company to adequately control its distribution network. Anglian Water utilises a District Metering System supplied by Metasphere and enjoys some of the lowest leakage rates in the country. It is a system that integrates with the existing telemetry infrastructure and utilises the flow data collected from RTUs and loggers.

Leakage and flow data is organised into a hierarchy of zones and can be calculated on a daily or sub-daily schedule. Data is reported on the web and can be organised by either zone or through dashboards.  Zones which have not been correctly configured or are missing data are flagged for attention, thus allowing leaks to be more easily detected.  Importantly it can help mitigate problems such as that experienced in Northern Ireland.

What’s The Point?

E-mail Print PDF

Just that – it collects data automatically from a single point, without fuss, and reports information in a timely fashion enabling users to manage their assets in an efficient and effective manner.

The Point has been developed with sub-metering and AMR in mind, where water consumption and usage profiling is part of an active water management programme.

The Point’s small footprint of just 156mm x 110mm x 112mm, enables it to be deployed in small Atplas boxes or meter pits where other loggers are too large. Its design exploits mainstream technologies, which helps to minimise costs whilst at the same time ensuring reliability. With IP68 rating, the Point uses the latest developments in low power technology deriving all the power it needs from an inexpensive field-replaceable battery pack. Together with the integral GPRS modem, this ensures a long service life with low infrastructure and minimal maintenance costs.

The Point offers water service companies a monitoring product which is simple to use and to install. For those organisations that require a reporting package, Metasphere can provide this, enabling a company to support its monitoring service to its commercial and industrial clients.
