The unfortunate situation that befell Northern Ireland Water last December serves to highlight the need for complete control of distribution networks. Whilst it is not always possible to predict the damage done to pipework by extreme weather conditions, what will help is to have the means in place whereby any damage that does arise, can be located and repaired as quickly as possible.
Insufficient flow and leakage information makes it very difficult for a company to adequately control its distribution network. Anglian Water utilises a District Metering System supplied by Metasphere and enjoys some of the lowest leakage rates in the country. It is a system that integrates with the existing telemetry infrastructure and utilises the flow data collected from RTUs and loggers.
Leakage and flow data is organised into a hierarchy of zones and can be calculated on a daily or sub-daily schedule. Data is reported on the web and can be organised by either zone or through dashboards. Zones which have not been correctly configured or are missing data are flagged for attention, thus allowing leaks to be more easily detected. Importantly it can help mitigate problems such as that experienced in Northern Ireland.
