Streams and rivers transport fresh water throughout the environment. They also feed reservoirs and sustain much of the wildlife and agriculture.
Undetected changes in rivers and streams can often have disastrous effects. Poisoning, loss of wildlife, drought and flooding are huge concerns and timely detection can be highly challenging. The two main reasons for monitoring water levels are for the monitoring of water resources, for example when issuing abstraction licenses or monitoring for flood protection.
Without adequate automated monitoring, delays to potential flood warning information is dramatically increased, reducing the amount of time affected individuals have to react.
Without monitoring it is difficult to accurately control the amount of water abstracted for drinking water or irrigation, which could lead to droughts and endanger wildlife.
