Gas networks need robust and reliable monitoring at District Governors to report network pressures, as well as extremity points for security of supply and validation points for network modelling.
Accurate data allows for:
- Pressure to be reduced at Governors to minimise shrinkage (leakage)
- Reliable network analysis
- Meeting regulatory requirement and environmental commitments
Maintaining the correct pressure is crucial for monitoring shrinkage and keeping a safe network, against a backdrop of infrastructure still being updated, including old gas main replacement and manual data download at some District Governors. Regulatory targets must also be met.
Some current monitoring solutions present technological issues that can result in unreliability, as well as the cost issues associated with downtime during maintenance and replacement.
Using Metasphere’s ATEX-approved Point Blue remote telemetry unit (RTU), with independent External Pressure Transducers, enables gas transporters to maintain the integrity of the gas network.
HOW DOES THE METASPHERE
The Point Blue RTU can interface with various pressure transducers currently on the market. External pressure transducers are widely used within the oil and gas industries. Connecting Point Blue with an external pressure transducer enables the detection of changes in pressure to be monitored in near real time. At a District Governor the inlet and outlet pressures are monitored and digital inputs monitor the Slam Shut and DP Filter of the working stream.
Point Blue provides dynamic trending; it logs data every 15 minutes (user configurable) and feeds this back daily directly to the top end system ensuring both data privacy and speed with no additional latency. Under alarm conditions it can be configured to capture, dial in and transfer the data much more frequently (e.g. once an hour or less) once the pre-set alarm threshold is reached, high high, high or low, low low. This can be reported, enabling a proactive approach to the status of the gas network while only calling upon Point Blue’s battery power when it is most needed.
Metasphere’s Point Blue can also monitor pressure at Pressure Reduction Stations (PRS), at Local Distribution Zones (LDZ) offtakes / City Gates, at extremity points, at Network Validation Points and many more places.
