Sewer and gully blockages are the main cause of residential and urban flooding in the UK, especially in high-risk urban areas. Monitoring gullies in real-time allows resources to be deployed to the relevant areas quickly, in the case of a flood event.

THE PROBLEM

Sewers and wastewater gullies have a finite capacity which is reduced by any blockages. When a sewer exceeds its flow capacity, spills into the local environment are highly likely. Water utilities have a duty and legal obligation to minimise the risk of uncontrolled discharges resulting from blocked sewers.

 

THE RISK

While uncontrolled sewer and gully spills pose severe risks to the environment and public health,  each year, flooding causes billions of pounds of damage to the UK.

 

THE SOLUTION

Real-time monitoring of sewer and gully levels combined with the triggering of automatic alarms when critical levels occur, using Point Orange IoT or 3G, and/or Point Blue, mean resources can be saved and infrastructure repaired in a timely manner, resulting in cost-saving and compliance.

HOW DOES THE METASPHERE
SOLUTION WORK?

 

This can be achieved using a Pulsar dBi HART Ultrasonic Level Transducer in combination with a Metasphere Point Colour Remote Telemetry Unit (RTU) and automatically monitored via a web-based data management system such as Metasphere’s Palette. Relevant RTUs include Point Orange IoT, Point Orange 3G, and Point Blue.  Typically, the RTU is set to power up every 15 minutes and record and save a level reading. The data is then transferred to Palette, Metasphere’s data visualisation service, or the client’s own servers, usually daily.

Should a critical level status occur at any time, an alarm signal will be transmitted immediately, and the RTU can be pre-programmed to reduce the interval between readings.
