Contemporary phenomena such as climate change are making it increasingly difficult for utilities to manage their networks. With old infrastructure in place, developing technologies make it possible to look holistically at a network as a series of connected and interdependent assets, in order to operate a network efficiently. Technologies such as IoT (internet of things) are enabling the collection of data from all parts of a water network, building a smarter, more intelligent and resilient network.
Legacy water networks consist of many individual components where the failure of any of them could compromise the whole system leading to losses of valuable assets. Rapid environmental changes are making it increasingly difficult to monitor and manage such networks.
Disruption to the supply of potable water represents serious risks to domestic consumers and businesses. Loss of valuable treated water is costly and can only be avoided by careful asset management. This requires strategic monitoring of the whole network to detect signs of early failures, so they can be addressed before becoming catastrophic.
Smart Network Management involves monitoring all critical components of the network such as pumps, valves, reservoirs and valves and returning the data to a central resource where it can be analysed for long term changes and short term failures. The information generated will allow operators to act when it is needed and to anticipate future resource management actions.
With Smart Network Management, the risk of failure is minimised, and pre-critical problems are identified before they become catastrophic.
HOW DOES THE METASPHERE
The Metasphere solution monitors the entire network by strategically deploying flow and level sensors throughout the network in combination with multiple Metasphere Point Colour Remote Telemetry Unit s(RTUs). The RTUs are networked to the web-based Palette telemetry software to provide a complete visualisation of the network and generate alarms should any part of the network become critical.
Alternatively, data can be returned to the client’s own servers, which can be configured to generate alarms and for data analysis.
